Rustam Minnikhanov: The Kazan Scientific Center consistently ranks among Russia's leading research organizations.
On September 3, a ceremonial meeting dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences was held in the new building of the G. Kamal Theater. The Rais of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, took part in the event.
The Rais of the republic noted that the history of the Kazan Scientific Center is inextricably linked with a period of severe trials, great labor and military feat borne by the Soviet people in the fight against Nazi Germany. The Government decided to evacuate the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR to the capital of Tatarstan on July 16, 1941. During the war years, employees of 33 leading domestic scientific institutions worked in Kazan, including 39 academicians and 44 corresponding members.
“We had future Nobel Prize laureates working here: the outstanding physicists Tamm, Frank, Cherenkov, Ginzburg, Landau, Kapitsa, and the greatest Soviet chemist Semenov. Working side by side with their brilliant colleagues, the scientists of the republic made a huge contribution to supplying the front and rear with scientific and technical developments important for the country’s defense. We can rightfully say that during the Great Patriotic War a line of scientific defense of our state passed through the capital of Tatarstan,” Rustam Minnikhanov said.
The Rais of Tatarstan noted that today, as more than 80 years ago, our country faces unprecedented external threats and challenges, and ensuring Russia’s technological leadership has become a necessary condition for further development and prosperity. “I am confident that, as before, by joining efforts under the leadership of the federal Government and the Russian Academy of Sciences we will solve all the tasks set by the President of the country, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, in the scientific and technical sphere,” Rustam Minnikhanov declared.
He emphasized that at present the Kazan Scientific Center plays the role of an outpost of the Russian Academy of Sciences not only in Tatarstan but in the entire Volga Federal District, and consistently ranks among Russia’s leading research organizations. It comprises six institutes that carry out projects important for the country across a wide range of areas — from biochemistry to quantum technologies.
Rustam Minnikhanov noted that the issue of creating a world-class scientific and educational campus for the further development of the republic’s academic science is being worked out: “It is intended to unite disparate scientific divisions on one site with modern infrastructure. This will give a powerful impetus to interdisciplinary research and applied investigations, and will contribute to the formation of a new center attracting talented young people to science.”
“Congratulations to the staff of the Kazan Scientific Center on the organization’s 80th anniversary. I wish you new breakthrough scientific results and discoveries, as well as good health and well-being,” added Rustam Minnikhanov.
Then the Rais of the republic presented a number of state awards of Tatarstan to employees of the Kazan Scientific Center of the RAS. Rustam Minnikhanov also awarded the laureate of the international Arbuzov Prize in the field of organophosphorus chemistry. The prize was awarded to Professor György Keglevich from Hungary. “I express my gratitude to the leadership of Tatarstan for establishing the Arbuzov Prize in the field of organophosphorus chemistry. It is highly valued worldwide among specialists in chemistry, phosphorus and organic chemistry. I am very proud to be among the other outstanding chemists honored with such a high award this year,” the prizewinner said.
The Director of the Kazan Scientific Center of the RAS, Alexey Kalachev, thanked the republic’s leadership for their constant attention and support. “Thank you for your caring position on the issue of developing the scientific potential of our republic, for your comprehensive support of the Kazan Scientific Center and for assisting all our initiatives,” he said.
Kazan Scientific Center of the RAS conducts scientific research and development in the fields of chemistry, physics, mechanics, materials science, energy, biology, agriculture, medicine and a number of other areas. The institution comprises six institutes: the A. E. Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry, the Kazan Physico-Technical Institute named after E. K. Zavoisky, the Institute of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering, the Kazan Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, the Institute of Energy and Advanced Technologies, and the Tatar Research Institute of Agriculture.
The staff of the Kazan Scientific Center of the RAS numbers more than 1,000 people, of whom almost 800 are research staff. They include 11 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, more than 100 Doctors of Sciences, almost 400 Candidates of Sciences and 53 postgraduate students. About half of the research staff are young scientists under 39 years old. The average age of the scientists is 44.
