The Kazan Zoo will take two Amur tiger cubs from Khabarovsk Krai as permanent residents.
Two Amur tiger cubs, rescued in Khabarovsk Krai during the harsh winter of 2024, will receive a permanent home at the Kazan Zoobotanical Garden. The corresponding permit for the transfer of Red Book-listed animals was issued by the Volga–Kama Interregional Office of Rosprirodnadzor.
The young predators were removed from the wild after extreme weather conditions and a lack of food forced them to approach human dwellings. After undergoing successful rehabilitation with specialists, the tigers nevertheless lost their natural wariness of humans, which makes returning them to their natural habitat impossible.
The decision to transfer the animals to the Kazan institution was made on the recommendation of the curator of the Amur tiger program of SOZAR. The Kazan Zoobotanical Garden, the oldest in Russia and one of the oldest in Europe, has the necessary conditions for keeping and breeding rare species.
It is planned that the tigers will be able to form a stable pair and eventually produce offspring, which will contribute to preserving the genetic diversity of the Amur tiger population.
