Trump threatened Afghanistan with "bad things" if it refused to hand over the airbase.
If Afghanistan, whose government has been led by the Taliban movement since 2021, does not return control of Bagram airbase to the United States, the country will face very serious consequences. This was said by U.S. President Donald Trump on his social network Truth Social.
"If Afghanistan does not return Bagram airbase to those who built it, to the United States of America, BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN!!!" the American leader wrote.
Later, during a conversation with reporters outside the White House, which was broadcast by the television network C-SPAN, Trump remarked: "If they (the authorities of Afghanistan – ed. note) don't do it, you'll find out what I will do."
Earlier, during a visit to the United Kingdom, the U.S. President said that the States are trying to regain control of the base, which is "one of the most powerful in the world" and, he added, is located an hour's drive from the place "where China produces its nuclear weapons."
The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Trump's call. In turn, former and current American officials, interviewed by the Reuters agency, concluded that Trump's plans could lead to a renewed invasion of that country.
