      Health screening — a chance to detect disease before complications

      In today’s fast pace of life we often put off taking care of our health. Meanwhile, many serious diseases can be prevented or detected at an early stage when they are more treatable. One of the most effective tools for this is health screening. We spoke with endocrinologist Regina Ravilyevna Usmanova of the State Autonomous Healthcare Institution "Zainsk Central District Hospital" about which endocrine disorders it helps to uncover.

      — Regina Ravilyevna, please tell us which conditions within the endocrinologist’s scope can be detected during a health screening?

      — Within the framework of screening we can diagnose a number of important changes. First and foremost, obesity. Excess weight is established at one of the first stages — when measuring the patient’s height and weight. Next, the key task is the detection of diabetes mellitus, both newly diagnosed cases and monitoring of already known disease. Also, during conversation with the patient we can sometimes suspect thyroid pathology. These are the main and most frequent problems we pay attention to.

      — How common is the detection, for example, of diabetes mellitus?

      — Diabetes is detected almost daily, and often in more than one person. Fortunately, this disease is less common in children. Children mainly suffer from type 1 diabetes, meaning they are insulin-dependent. However, today we observe a worrying trend: childhood obesity is progressing. There are many more children with excess weight, and, unfortunately, we are already seeing cases of prediabetes and even type 2 diabetes, which was almost unheard of before.

      — What recommendations can you give our readers?

      — The main recommendation: know your risk factors. If you have relatives with diabetes (grandparents, parents), you are already in a risk group. Additional warning signs are excess weight, obesity, as well as comorbidities such as hypertension, a history of heart attack or stroke. Age also matters. We strongly recommend that everyone over 40 have a fasting venous blood glucose test every year. This is the necessary minimum.

      — Some residents still ignore screening, considering it a waste of time. What would you say to such people?

      — I am convinced that screening must be done at least once a year. It is an effective way to reduce the risk of missing the onset of a serious disease that could later lead to disability and a significant decline in quality of life. It is an investment in your healthy future.

      — Why is screening specifically recommended annually after forty?

      — Yes, after forty it is indeed necessary to be examined annually. It is believed that this age is a kind of milestone after which the risks of many chronic diseases increase. Therefore regular monitoring becomes not just a recommendation, but a necessity.
