Global Challenges of the 21st Century: Russia’s leading experts discussed the legacy of pan-ideologies at KIU.
A round table attended by the country’s leading historians, political scientists and philosophers was held at the Kazan Innovative University named after V.G. Timiryasov (KIU). Scholars analyzed how ideologies of the past influence contemporary geopolitics and what risks and opportunities they pose for Russia’s future.
On September 25, KIU became a venue for a serious conversation about the fates of the world and Russia. Within the walls of our university a theoretical-methodological round table was held: “Pan-ideologies of the Modern era in the context of the geopolitical challenges of the first half of the 21st century.” The event brought together leading experts — historians, political scientists, sociologists and philosophers from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Ufa and other Russian research centers.
Relevance of the dialogue: why is it important to talk about this today?
The aim of the round table was to study the historical influence of major ideologies (Pan-Slavism, Pan-Turkism, Pan-Germanism, etc.) of the Modern era on the formation of the contemporary world. Participants paid special attention to analyzing the risks and challenges associated with the transformation of these concepts in new geopolitical conditions, as well as to searching for strategic orientations for Russia as a state-civilization. These questions are more relevant now than ever and are applicable to the future.
The opening address was given by KIU’s First Vice-Rector Igor Bikeev. He outlined the key issues of the event: “Today we will be working on the problem of pan-ideology in the face of contemporary challenges. In my view, these are a sort of constructed ideologies that seek to unite different national or religious groups under a single worldview, regardless of state borders. At the same time, they are instruments in the struggle for power. A terrible weapon that makes it possible to destroy states and annihilate huge masses of people. They change the world; there are countless examples of this both in antiquity and in the modern world.”
Key theses and concepts of the discussion
At the center of the discussion was the concept of “state-civilizations.” Professor Oleg Agapov, developing this idea, proposed adhering to the principle of “civilizational realism.” “This implies studying each of the contenders for the status of ‘state-civilization’ — China, India, Russia, Iran, Turkey, etc. — as an active project of history, possessing its own civilizational consciousness, will, interests and value scale,” the professor noted.
The round table program was intensive and included presentations on such key topics as the development of the concept of state-civilizations and overcoming the legacy of pan-ideologies, geopolitical security risks for Russia from the development of pan-ideologies in the 21st century, the transformation of ideological concepts, Eurasianism and Pan-Turkism as competing integration projects, and Pan-Turkism in the age of artificial intelligence.
Key participants included: Professor, Advisor to the Rector of KIU O.D. Agapov; Professor, Director of the Ho Chi Minh Institute at Saint Petersburg State University (St. Petersburg) V.N. Kolotov; General Director of the information and consulting center “AKSON” O.V. Nuzhdin; Senior Analyst of ICC “AKSON” L.Z. Farrahova; Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor, member of the Valdai Club (Buryat State University) A.V. Mikhalev; Candidate of Political Sciences, Senior Researcher, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Moscow) A.P. Segal; Candidate of Political Sciences, Associate Professor (Ufa University of Science and Technology) R.R. Vakhitov; Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of KIU (Kazan) R.V. Kurochkin; Candidate of Political Sciences, Head of Department, ISPI FNISC RAS (Moscow) I.A. Seleznev; General Director of the Center for the Development of Humanitarian Technologies “NEW ERA” A.A. Shabaltin.
From theory to practice: important findings
Reports based on current sociological data drew particular interest. Experts, in particular, discussed perceptions of Russia among contemporary Turkic youth. As it turned out, the younger generation evaluates their living environment positively and identifies themselves as part of Russia’s multiethnic society. In addition, Turkic youth see significant potential in developing cooperation between Russia and China, India and Arab countries.
KIU’s role in addressing global challenges
Holding a scientific event of this level underscores Kazan Innovative University’s status as a center for expert dialogue. The university not only trains high-class specialists but also creates a space for reflecting on the most complex contemporary processes, making a tangible contribution to the development of strategic decisions for the country. The round table contributed to an in-depth scientific analysis of one of the most topical themes in contemporary geopolitics and outlined directions for further interdisciplinary research.
