A 44-year-old resident of Chistopol received a message in a messaging app from his friend asking him to transfer 14,700 rubles, allegedly to pay for goods ordered on a marketplace.

      The message looked quite convincing, and, without verifying its authenticity, the man promptly transferred the money. About an hour later the same friend called him and said that his account had been hacked and asked him not to respond to messages about money transfers. It was only after that that the man realized he had become a victim of fraudsters and filed a report with the police. An investigator of the OMVD of Russia for the Chistopolsky District has opened a criminal case under Article 159 Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, “Fraud.” Police officers strongly recommend that citizens remain vigilant and follow a number of simple rules that help minimize the risk of becoming victims of similar fraud schemes. Important: do not transfer money or make payments based solely on messages in messengers; be sure to verify the authenticity of a transfer request with relatives and acquaintances by phone or other independent channels of communication; do not follow suspicious links and do not enter bank card details on pages whose authenticity is not certain.
