      On October 21 the Orthodox Church commemorates Venerable Pelagia of Antioch and the holy martyr Joseph Levinson. The memory of Venerable Tryphon of Vyatka, known for his spiritual feats and the founding of a monastery, is also honored.

      Traditions of the day

      In Rus' this day was called Pelageya-Zyabushka or Tryphon-Zamorozkiy. It was considered important to finish preparing cabbage for the winter — cutting it together as a family. Men began to prepare winter clothes and footwear and checked the harness. Young women gathered for sewing circles and sang ritual songs.

      What not to do

      Do not refuse help to those in need and to strangers. It is not recommended to start new undertakings without finishing old ones. It was forbidden to quarrel over money and to lend salt after sunset. One should not kill spiders in the house on this day.

      If there is frost on the trees in the morning — it predicts a snowy winter. If a crow caws deeply — it foretells rain. If a squirrel makes large stores — it means a frosty winter. If a birch leaf falls cleanly — it promises an easy year. If fog lies on the ground in the morning — it foretells a sunny day.
