Clergy at civil defense training

      Over the past few days Kazan clergymen taking part in a civil defense training program had to render first aid and perform resuscitation measures. Orthodox protopriests and mosque imams sat down together at the desks of the Educational and Methodological Center for Civil Defense and Emergency Situations of the Republic of Tatarstan. The training course lasted 24 hours.

      The idea of training clergy in civil defense was put into practice back in 2017, when a corresponding agreement was signed with the religious organizations of the Republic of Tatarstan. Therefore, these courses find their place in the annual plan of the Educational and Methodological Center for Civil Defense and Emergency Situations of the Republic of Tatarstan, which was approved by the Deputy Head of Civil Defense of the Republic of Tatarstan — Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan Alexey Pesoshin.

      "It has become a good tradition for us to hold civil defense classes among clergymen. Today one of the topics is first aid. The fathers and imams learned how to apply bandages, stop bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. There are always a lot of people in churches and mosques. Our task is to train clergymen to provide first aid to victims and to organize all necessary actions in the event of an emergency. Twenty-two representatives of the Kazan Diocese and 15 servants of Muslim mosques took part in the training," noted Ferdinand Timurkhanov, director of the Educational and Methodological Center for Civil Defense and Emergency Situations of the Republic of Tatarstan.

      During the practical session the mosque imams applied bandages to Orthodox clergymen and vice versa; they learned how to properly apply tourniquets to stop bleeding, and trained on special manikins to correctly perform external chest compressions and artificial lung ventilation "mouth-to-mouth."

      "Such classes are necessary both for parishioners and for clergymen. Unfortunately, these are troubled times now. We must be able to provide first aid to anyone in need, wherever trouble may occur. During the practical sessions we acquired skills that we can already apply in everyday life for ourselves, for relatives, parishioners and simply for passersby. We were taught this here. Many thanks to the instructors of the Educational and Methodological Center for Civil Defense and Emergency Situations of the Republic of Tatarstan. The program is very intensive. We got so involved in the classes, became fascinated, and realized that three days is not enough for us. We want to learn even more in this area of civil defense," shared Ilshat Hazrat of the Rauza Mosque.

      Hegumen Arkady Loginov of the Sviyazhsk Dormition (Bogoroditsko-Uspensky) Monastery reported that every person should at least have knowledge of how to provide first aid when an injured person is nearby.

      "It is better to undergo such training. We must not freeze at the moment a person needs help, when every minute literally counts. This usually happens on the roads. It can also happen during services: some people, especially the elderly, can lose consciousness, faint from the heat. Or a heart attack may occur. Then resuscitative actions may be required. Today we were studying cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The rector of the church or the imam of the mosque, as a leader, should ensure that during such situations there is a person nearby capable of providing first aid, and he himself, first and foremost, should be such a person."
