      Photo: Yandex In Kazan, at the beginning of December a goods delivery service using robots — rovers — will begin operating for the first time. The initial zone is bounded by Nazarbaev – Minnulin – Salimzhanov – Aydinov – Tikhomirnov streets in the Vakhitovsky district of the city. Six delivery robots will be deployed on the route. Yandex’s project is being implemented with the support of the Kazan executive committee and the Ministry of Digital Development of the Republic of Tatarstan. Together with them the company is drawing up route maps and defining algorithms for actions in the most challenging sections.

      “We study all high-tech innovative practices with interest, and if they bring convenience to residents, we strive to introduce useful services. ‘Smart City’ is the future of large cities; it is rapidly taking shape today. We are not merely observing new opportunities but are also embedding these goals in our development programs, allocating budget for them and have already achieved a great deal. Such a policy attracts high-tech companies that see opportunities in Kazan for implementing innovative projects. We are glad for such a partnership in the interests of Kazan residents,” says Kazan’s mayor Ilsur Metshin.

      In mid-December delivery is planned to begin in a second zone bounded by Tikhomirnov – Pushkin – Bolshaya Krasnaya – Tolstoy – Karl Marx – Ershov – Chekhov – Frunze Grove.

      In total, 30 locations have been identified across all districts of Kazan where rovers will operate, including outlying areas such as “Salavat Kupere” in the eastern part of the city, “Svetlaya Dolina” in the west, and “Solovyinaya Roscha” in the south.

      Maximum load capacity — 25 kg. On a single charge a delivery robot can operate for about 10 hours. It moves at an average speed of 3.5 km/h with a top speed of 7 km/h. The company plans to increase the robot’s average speed to 8 km/h next year.

      The robot uses pedestrian and bicycle traffic light signals at intersections, always giving priority to pedestrians and vehicles.

      In the future the number of delivery robots in Kazan and Innopolis may be increased. Currently 15 rovers are operating in Innopolis.
