A conference was held in Kazan to mark the city's 1,020th anniversary.

      An All‑Russian scientific and practical conference, “Millennial Kazan,” timed to the 1,020th anniversary of the city’s founding, was held in Kazan. The event took place at the Academy of Sciences of Tatarstan and brought together leading researchers, historians, cultural scholars, economists and encyclopedists from various regions of the country. The Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan, Farid Mukhametshin, took part in the conference, the parliament’s press service reported.

      Participants discussed modern methods of studying the history of Kazan and other ancient cities, and the issues involved in preparing encyclopedias of metropolises and urban agglomerations. Representatives of government bodies, research centers, universities and cultural institutions joined the discussions.

      Farid Mukhametshin emphasized the importance of holding the conference on the eve of the Year of Military and Labor Valor, declared by the Head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov. He reminded attendees that Kazan was awarded the title “City of Labor Valor” by decree of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. According to him, this status reflects the enormous contribution of city residents to bringing the Victory closer and their labor heroism.

      The Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan noted Kazan’s unique path, its role as a cultural bridge between Europe and Asia, and the Turkic‑Slavic and Islamo‑Orthodox unity. He said that the authorities pay special attention to the preservation of spiritual sites: the city has 70 mosques, 45 Orthodox temples, 13 churches, five Old Believer sites and a synagogue.

      Mukhametshin reminded the audience that next year Kazan will become the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World. He stressed the importance of preserving the memory of the past, since studying the city’s history contributes to the formation of civic identity, patriotism and an understanding of the country’s cultural diversity.
