      Where the garden’s main enemies overwinter

      Most pests and disease pathogens overwinter in the garden. Their main shelters:

      - Fallen leaves: A refuge for scab, powdery mildew and anthracnose spores, as well as for spider mites and weevils.

      - Top layer of soil: Sawfly larvae, gooseberry moth caterpillars and some codling moth caterpillars overwinter here.

      - Bark and branches:

       - Up to 300 caterpillars of the hawthorn moth and zlatoguzka overwinter in nests made of dry leaves.

       - Caterpillars of apple and plum codling moths hide in bark cracks.

       - Egg clutches of aphids, the ringed silk moth and scale insects are attached to branch bark.

      - Mummified fruits: They are a source of fruit rot.

      Step-by-step plan for November garden treatment

      1. Removal and destruction of plant residues

      Rake up and burn all fallen leaves or compost them securely, covering them with a layer of soil or peat. This destroys the bulk of pathogenic spores.

      2. Inspection and mechanical destruction of pests

      - Trapping belts: Remove and burn paper belts. Boil burlap for reuse.

      - Moth egg masses: Find and scrape egg masses from bark, fences and structures. Burn the collected eggs.

      - Overwintering nests: Cut off and burn all visible nests of hawthorn moths and zlatoguzka.

      3. Bark cleaning and whitewashing

      Gently clean trunks and scaffold branches of dead bark, placing a cloth underneath. Collect and burn the debris. After cleaning, apply whitewash to protect against spring sunscald.

      Whitewash recipe:

      - 2–3 kg of freshly slaked lime

      - 0.5 kg of copper sulfate

      - 10 liters of water

      4. Autumn digging of root circles

      Dig over the soil in the area under the canopy projection. This disrupts pests’ wintering conditions and brings them to the surface where they will die from the frost.

      5. Protection against rodents

      Wrap the trunks of young trees with fine-mesh wire, fiberglass cloth or boughs. This will reliably protect the bark from mice and hares.

      6. Attracting useful birds

      Hang nest boxes for tits — in winter tits will use them as shelter while cleaning the garden of pests. Don’t forget winter feeding for your feathered helpers.

      Comprehensive garden preparation in November is an investment in next season’s harvest. By taking the time for thorough treatment, you will significantly reduce pesticide use in spring and ensure the health of your fruit trees and shrubs.
