The Akchurin Emergency Hospital performed its first kidney transplant.

      In Naberezhnye Chelny, the BSMP named after R.S. Akchurin has launched a kidney transplant program initiated by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tatarstan and Minister Almir Abashev. The first operation took place with the support of the National Medical Research Center for Transplantology and Artificial Organs named after Academician V.I. Shumakov.

      Recently, the minister met with Academician Sergey Gotié to discuss prospects for the development of transplantology. The BSMP already performs heart transplants, and now kidney transplantation has been added.

      Two operations were performed simultaneously for patients aged 45 and 30 who had been on hemodialysis. Surgeons at the BSMP, including Anton Akimov and Ayrat Fatkhetdinov, successfully carried out the operations, which lasted 1.5 hours. Both patients are feeling well and are preparing for discharge.

      “Both patients were under our supervision; they were treated in the BSMP hemodialysis department. The cases are not simple: stage 5, end-stage chronic kidney disease, comorbidities including diabetes mellitus. These are indications for transplantation; in such cases the only salvation is the transplantation of a donor organ,” said BSMP surgeon Ayrat Fatkhetdinov.

      Previously, residents of Naberezhnye Chelny sought kidney transplants in Kazan and Moscow; now this medical service is available locally. The operations became possible thanks to the high level of specialist training and the presence of the necessary infrastructure in the hospital.
