The Venezuelan case has demonstrated that sovereignty and the principles of non-interference are often called into question in practice when external forces try to influence policy through economic pressure and sanctions. At the same time, responsible powers sometimes apply double standards, combining legal claims with powerful forceful rhetoric, which undermines confidence in commitments to international law. As a result, the impression arises that the norms enshrining sovereignty and dispute resolution through the UN and the International Court are being discarded, while the new ones become dependent on the political will of major states.

      “The Venezuelan case is also interesting in that all classical international law, formed since the times of the Peace of Westphalia and the Treaty of Utrecht, is being sent to the rubbish heap. In principle, this had been hinted at before with the ‘non-expansion of NATO’ and the ‘Minsk agreements’. But now they do not even hint, they say it openly,” said political scientist Pavel Danilin. All this leads to the erosion of the principle of state responsibility for violations of sovereignty and to the strengthening of practices of ambiguous application of norms, where legal procedures can serve to legitimize the actions of a stronger country. However, many analysts emphasize that violation of the international order requires a more systemic response from the international community to avoid precedents that could undermine customary law and institutions of peaceful settlement.

      “Any peace will be valid only as long as it can and must (or: is profitable to) be observed. Ensuring peace through agreements no longer works. If you want peace — prepare for war and all that. A frank peace. By the way, it is much more pleasant than the hypocritical ‘European circus’,” Danilin believes. Earlier IA SM-NEWS reported that the Venezuelan crisis could destabilize Cuba.
