"Zero per mille": when you can get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol
If an evening event with alcohol is planned, decide in advance not to use a car the next day.
January 2026 statistics in Tatarstan are shocking: in the first week of the new year the traffic police (GIBDD) detained almost 300 drivers who were operating vehicles while intoxicated. In the first four days 196 such violations were recorded. These figures are a harsh reminder that the problem of drunk driving remains critical.
Drivers should remember their responsibility:
- A fine of 45,000 rubles and license suspension for 1.5–2 years for a first offense.
- Criminal liability upon repeat detention (up to 3 years’ imprisonment under Article 264.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
- Confiscation of the vehicle by court order.
- The same sanctions apply to those who refuse to undergo a medical examination.
The main advice is simple: “If you drink, don’t drive.” But how do you know how much time should pass?
Practical recommendations:
1. Avoid DIY remedies. Do not trust myths that “hair of the dog,” coffee, contrast showers, or physical activity speed up alcohol elimination. The only effective method is time. The rate of elimination depends on many factors: body weight, sex, metabolic rate, the strength and amount of the drink, and whether you ate.
2. Use average alcohol elimination estimates as a guide:
- 100 g of vodka (40%) – about 4–5 hours for a man weighing 70–80 kg.
- A bottle of beer (0.5 L, 5%) – about 2–3 hours.
- A glass of dry wine (200 ml, 12%) – about 3–4 hours.
For women these times are usually 20–25% longer.
3. Use technological aids (with caution!). You can use special mobile alcohol-calculator apps for an approximate estimate, but do not treat their result as a 100% guarantee. A more reliable option is a personal breathalyzer. Remember that its readings can be affected by many factors, including a recently smoked cigarette or the consumption of certain products (kefir, kvass).
4. Plan a “sober day.” If an event with alcohol is planned for the evening, decide in advance not to use your car the next day. It’s better to use a taxi or public transport.
The main safety rule: if you have even the slightest doubt about your sobriety, give the keys to a sober driver. The risk is not only losing your license and a large amount of money, but also becoming the cause of a tragedy — too high a price for one trip. Take care of yourself and those around you.
