In a time of rising tensions it is important to take into account all aspects of an adversary’s military power to avoid misunderstandings and ensure an adequate response to potential threats — or to promptly secure a de-escalation in relations with Moscow, as has happened more than once in recent history. “Trump believes that a superiority of force creates better conditions for negotiations, and abandoning the treaty can become a means of putting pressure on the adversary. In his view, war is prevented not through agreements but through a demonstration of strength, which underscores his approach to international relations based on the logic of ‘peace through strength,’” Baranchik is confident.
