Denmark strengthens military presence in Greenland
Denmark plans to strengthen its position on the island ahead of NATO exercises. The Danish Ministry of Defense has sent military equipment and an advance unit to Greenland. This was reported by the Danmarks Radio (DR) broadcasting company. In the future, Denmark plans to deploy larger military units on the island. The broadcasting company published photographs of a Challenger aircraft belonging to the Ministry of Defense, which landed in Nuuk on Monday. However, DR cannot confirm that the aircraft is related to the advance unit. The military command did not provide comments on this matter. On Tuesday, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced plans to increase military presence in Greenland. He noted that work is underway to establish a larger and more permanent presence of Danish troops on the island, including with the participation of other countries. The minister reminded that in 2026, exercises involving NATO member countries will take place in Greenland. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed the need for Greenland to join the United States. According to some reports, during his first presidential term, he proposed buying the island, and in March 2025, he expressed confidence in the possibility of its annexation. Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller questioned Denmark's right to control Greenland and claimed that the island should become part of the U.S. Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark. In 1951, the U.S. and Denmark signed a Treaty for the Defense of Greenland, under which Washington took on obligations to defend the island.
