The new season for pentathletes starts in Kirov.
The 2026 season in modern pentathlon will open on January 19. On this day in Kirov, the best pentathletes from Russia and Belarus will begin their battle for victory in the first stage of the traditional Pavel Lednyov Cup. Additionally, the Russians will compete for another trophy – the National Cup.
In the women's competition, the winners of all Pavel Lednyov Cup Finals will participate – the 2022 champion, Russian Gulnaz Gubaidullina, who won the world championship title in the individual event in 2017; the champion of the 2023 and 2024 tournaments, Belarusian Maria Gnedchik, and the current winner of the Final, Violetta Gureeva (Belarus). Alongside them will be the champions of Russia from different years: Amina Tagirova, Yana Solovyeva, Ksenia Fraltsova, the 2021 European relay champion Anastasia Chistyakova, the 2024 junior world champion Victoria Sazonova (all from Russia), and many other strong athletes, both experienced and young. Among the men, preparing to start are three-time Russian champion Yegor Gromadsky, Pavel Lednyov Cup Final winners Kirill Manuylo (2022) and Pyotr Borshchev (2024), 2021 Russian champion Artem Portyanko, 2021 world relay champion Maxim Kuznetsov, current holder of the Russian Cup Anton Gadetsky, and many other athletes ready to make their mark in the season's first competition. The Belarusian team will feature such masters as European Championship medalists Ivan Khamsov and Yevgeny Orel, Pavel Lednyov Cup stage winner Vladislav Nesterov, and winners and medalists of international competitions Vladislav Melkozyorov, Maxim Fedotko, and others. The tournament will take place from January 19 to 22 at the Kirov sports complex "Veresniki" in the indoor arena and swimming pool. The first two days will feature semifinals, and medals will be contested on January 21 (women) and January 22 (men). The competitions are organized by the Russian Modern Pentathlon Federation in collaboration with the Kirov Region Modern Pentathlon Federation and aim to promote the sport and a healthy lifestyle.
It should be noted that since 2025, the state program "Sport of Russia" has been in effect, aimed at popularizing mass sports and improving the quality of life for Russians. One of the main goals of the state program is to involve up to 70% of Russians in sports activities by 2030.
