"Go to hell": students of a Kazan university were sent questionnaires about their attitude towards the war against Ukraine and service in drone forces.

      In December of last year, recruitment of students for the war began in Russia. The project "Go to the Woods," which helps avoid military service in the Russian army, reported that the Kazan Aviation Institute (KAI) sent students a questionnaire about the war and service in unmanned systems troops. A student sent screenshots of the questionnaire to the organization. According to the student, the link to the questionnaire was shared in his group by the class leader. "Go to the Woods" writes that the questionnaire was requested to be filled out "urgently." "The survey is presented as 'nationwide' and 'anonymous': the description states that personal data does not need to be provided. But, as the student writes, at the end of the questionnaire, they ask to indicate the university, course, gender, and place of study," clarified the project "Go to the Woods." Thus, the questionnaire contains questions related to the war, service in unmanned troops, and emigration: If you had the opportunity to go back in time and cancel the decision to start the special military operation (SMO) or the special military operation that Russian authorities are obliged to call the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, how would you act? What is your attitude towards the decision to conduct the special military operation? In 2025, unmanned systems troops will be formed within the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for conducting combat operations using drones. The contract service period in these troops is one year with the possibility of extension. During the service period, students are granted an academic leave. In the second phase — starting January 2026 — they began actively recruiting students who were on the verge of expulsion. Since February, they started recruiting all students. The publication "Vyorstka" counted at least 200 recruitment meetings that took place in universities and colleges across Russia by early March, including in the Volga regions. The main recruitment tool became the "special contract" in unmanned systems troops, promising "high-tech" service away from the front line for a period of one year. Lawyer Artem Klyga from the "Movement of Conscious Refusers" told "Idel.Realii" that legally, the "one-year contract" that is often promised to students simply does not exist. According to him, points 4-5 of the Russian president's decree on mobilization make any agreement indefinite until the end of the mobilization period. In Klyga's opinion, the promises of one-year contracts and service away from the front are "complete nonsense," as there is no legislative basis for such conditions.
