Valerian Garanin, one of the compilers of the Red Book of Tatarstan, passed away at the age of 98.
At the age of 97, one of the largest domestic zoologists-herpetologists, Valerian Garanin, passed away. This was reported by the press service of Kazan Federal University. He was one of the compilers and editors of the Red Book of Tatarstan, as well as the organizer of scientific research in the territory of the Volga-Kama Nature Reserve. Garanin's scientific and pedagogical activities were closely associated with Kazan Federal University. In 1952, he graduated from the Faculty of Biology and Soil Science, then worked at the Kazan Institute of Biology of the Kazan branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, progressing from a laboratory assistant to a senior researcher. Since 1970, he had been engaged in pedagogical work at the Faculty of Biology and Soil Science of KFU: he was an associate professor, head of the Department of Nature Conservation, and deputy dean. Valerian Ivanovich's scientific interests included animal ecology, herpetology, nature conservation, and the history of science. He was the author of more than 350 publications, including 30 monographs and books, among which are "Amphibians and Reptiles of the Volga-Kama Region" and "Volga-Kama Nature Reserve." Garanin was a corresponding member of the International Pedagogical Academy, an honorary member of the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation, and the Russian Herpetological Society named after A.M. Nikolsky. His scientific and pedagogical activities were marked by numerous awards, including the medals "For Valorous Labor" (1970), "For Labor Valor" (1979), "Labor Veteran" (1984), "In Memory of the 1000th Anniversary of Kazan" (2005), the honorary medal "For Merits" (Volga-Kama State Natural Biosphere Reserve, 2010), the badge of distinction for the honorary title "Honored Worker of Education of the Russian Federation" (2018), the badge for the honorary title "Honored Ecologist of the Republic of Tatarstan" (2018), and the honorary diploma from the rector of KFU (2023).
The farewell to the scientist will take place on Sunday, March 29, at 11:00 in the Marble Hall of Kazan Federal University (2nd building, Kremlovskaya St., 35).
