Nikolai Ivanovich Maikov was born on April 30, 1918, in Yaroslavl. Losing his parents early, he ended up in Stary Tokmak, where his aunt took him in. Here, the future hero completed seven grades. In August 1942, his front-line biography began. As part of the 270th Bomber Aviation Division, he fought near Stalingrad. For his courage and skillful actions in breaking through the powerful defenses of the enemy, by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on November 1, 1943, Guards Lieutenant Nikolai Maikov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
On his chest are the "Golden Star," the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Orders of the Patriotic War I and II class, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, and numerous medals.
During the war, Nikolai Maikov rose from a private pilot to a squadron commander, making 189 combat sorties.
After the war, he lived in Zhukovsky near Moscow, where he passed away on March 13, 2005. But the memory of the hero lives on in Zainsk — a street is named after him here. This serves as a reminder of the price at which Victory was achieved and how important it is to preserve historical memory.
