Tuberculosis – a disease of the past?

      Every year on March 24, the World Tuberculosis Day is celebrated. This date was established in 1982 by the decision of WHO and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the Koch bacillus — the causative agent of the disease. The goal is to raise awareness about tuberculosis and preventive measures.

      Is tuberculosis a disease of the past?

      Unfortunately, no. Tuberculosis remains a relevant infection today: new cases are registered every year, including among socially well-off individuals. It is transmitted through airborne droplets (when coughing, talking, sneezing) and most often affects the lungs. The disease can progress silently for a long time, without pronounced symptoms, which is why screening is important.

      What is important for prevention:

      📌 vaccination in childhood (BCG and revaccination according to the schedule);

      📌 regular fluorographic or radiological examination of adults;

      📌 timely consultation with a doctor when suspicious symptoms appear (cough lasting more than 2–3 weeks, especially with sputum, hemoptysis, sudden weight loss not related to diet, night sweats, weakness);

      📌 adherence to sanitary norms, strengthening immunity and treating chronic diseases, proper nutrition, quitting smoking and alcohol, tempering, engaging in sports, maintaining cleanliness in premises, preventing dustiness, and ventilating rooms.

      Tuberculosis can be cured, especially if detected at an early stage and strictly following the prescribed therapy regimen.

      Therefore, it is so important to undergo examinations regularly: they allow for timely detection of the disease and starting treatment as early as possible.
