A man born in 1983 reported a fraud to the police in Kazan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan reports. He said that an unknown person called him and informed him that a package had arrived in his name. To receive it, he needed to dictate a code from a text message. The victim, unaware of the deception, provided the numbers. After that, he began receiving calls from other numbers. The fraudsters posed as employees of government agencies and convinced the man that fraudulent actions were being committed against him. To "secure" his savings, they instructed him to issue a power of attorney for obtaining a loan and then transfer money to "safe accounts." The victim followed all the instructions and transferred more than 1.8 million rubles to the scammers. Part of this amount consisted of borrowed money. Later, the man realized he had been deceived and contacted the police. A criminal case has been initiated under part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Fraud"). The police in Kazan warn: never give codes from messages to strangers, no matter who they claim to be. "Safe accounts" do not exist. Any demands to transfer money under the pretext of protection from fraud are fraud itself. Terminate the dialogue.
Law enforcement and financial organization employees never request money transfers, app installations, or card details over the phone. Remember this and do not let yourself be deceived.
