Traffic Police: driver fatigue can lead to an accident
The traffic police reminded about rest norms when operating vehicles
The State Traffic Safety Inspectorate reminded motorists about adhering to established rest time norms when operating vehicles. This measure is aimed at preventing road traffic accidents related to driver fatigue. Earlier, regional media reported on two high-profile accidents caused by driver fatigue. In the first incident, a group of four people was returning from a night fishing trip: the driver of a Lada Granta lost control due to sudden drowsiness and collided with a tractor. The impact was fatal — all those in the car, as well as the tractor driver, died. In the second case, a Hyundai driver traveled about two thousand kilometers without the required break, after which he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a truck. The consequences were tragic: the driver and three passengers died on the spot.
Representatives of the traffic police emphasize that chronic fatigue significantly slows reaction time, reduces the ability to concentrate on the road situation, and increases the risk of uncontrolled drowsiness, posing a direct threat to all road users.
Current traffic rules regulate the following restrictions:
- The total driving time should not exceed 9 hours per day;
- After 4.5 hours of continuous driving, a break of at least 45 minutes is mandatory;
- Daily rest must be at least 11 hours, and weekly rest must be at least 45 hours.
At the same time, the norms allow for some flexibility. The 45-minute break can be split into two parts: 15 and 30 minutes. The driving duration can be increased to 10 hours per day, but not more than twice a week. Daily rest can be reduced to 9 hours (a maximum of three times over a two-week period), and weekly rest can be reduced to 24 hours (once every two weeks) provided that the lost time is compensated later.
Traffic police employees advise planning routes in advance, avoiding long stretches of road without stops, and taking breaks every 2-3 hours. At the first signs of fatigue, it is recommended to stop immediately to recover. If fatigue is severe, it is advisable to hand over the wheel to another driver or postpone the trip until full recovery of work capacity.
