A flood forecasting system with AI has been launched in Tatarstan.
In Tatarstan, a pilot monitoring system for flood situations has been implemented. The project was carried out by MTS in collaboration with the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan. The complex is already operational in the Kaybitsky district — an area at high risk of flooding. The system includes sensors and an analytical platform that track water levels and weather parameters in real-time. Equipment has been installed on the Birlya River: it records water levels, precipitation, air and soil temperature, pressure, and wind direction every 10 minutes. Data is transmitted over the MTS network and processed by a digital platform with elements of artificial intelligence. It generates flood situation forecasts and presents information to dispatchers in a convenient format. In the event of a flooding threat, the system automatically alerts emergency services. As noted by MTS director in Tatarstan Marat Kabanov, similar solutions are already being used in several Russian regions and help respond to environmental risks in advance. The Ministry of Emergency Situations explained that the site for the pilot was chosen deliberately: the village of Fyodorovskoye regularly suffers from spring floods of the river. The new system allows for the abandonment of constant on-site visits and enables rapid remote assessment of the situation. Following testing, the technology may be scaled to other potentially hazardous areas of the republic.
