       In Mendeleevsk, investigative authorities have concluded the investigation into the high-profile criminal case initiated due to the tragic death of two ten-year-old boys, who fell into open wells and died at the scene on January 4, 2026.

       According to the press service of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan, the defendants in the case are the acting director and the head of the water supply and sewage section of the Mendeleevsky energy district of the joint-stock company RPO "Tatkommunaenergo," reports RBC. The investigation established that from September 2025 to January 4, 2026, the accused, whose direct responsibilities included monitoring the technical condition and safety of the subordinate utility networks, grossly ignored the requirements of industry regulations. They failed to organize mandatory inspections and examinations of the water supply and sewage networks in the assigned territory. As a result of this inaction, the covers on the wells were simply absent, and the dangerous engineering structures were not fenced off or marked with warning signs. The actions of the employees of "Tatkommunaenergo" have been legally assessed under part 3 of article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which provides for liability for negligence, that is, the failure to perform or improper performance of official duties by an official, resulting in the accidental death of two individuals. As of now, the prosecutor's office of the Mendeleevsky district of Tatarstan has approved the indictment, recognizing the materials collected by the investigation as sufficient and admissible for submission to the court. The case has been sent to court for substantive consideration. It was previously reported that 51 criminal cases had been initiated due to violations of labor protection.
