"KazanForum": Prospects for Cooperation between Tatarstan and Ethiopia in the Agro-Industrial Complex
Today, at the 17th International Economic Forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum," a business session titled "Russia - Ethiopia" took place. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustem Gainullin, participated in it. The moderator was Pavel Shibilov, the head of the international development project at the Russian Export Center. The session also featured the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to the Russian Federation, Genet Teshome Jirru, the General Director of the Ethiopian Trading Business Corporation, Behailu Nigussi Demeke, the representative of the Ethiopian investment holding, Bruk Taye Gameda, the head of the Business Development Directorate "Warehouses" of JSC "Russian Post," Alexander Dvonkowski, and the director of the Russian Federal Center for Judicial Expertise named after Professor A.R. Shlyakhov at the Ministry of Justice of Russia, Alexey Mamontov.
In his speech, Rustem Gainullin emphasized the high potential and mutual interest of Tatarstan in developing cooperation in the agro-industrial complex. Rustem Gainullin noted that for Tatarstan, one of the leading agricultural regions of Russia, developing partnerships with African countries, particularly Ethiopia, is a strategically important direction. Ethiopia, with its growing economy and significant agricultural potential, represents a promising partner for exchanging experiences, technologies, and food products.
The Deputy Minister presented key achievements of Tatarstan's agro-industrial complex: the gross output exceeding 400 billion rubles in 2025, leading positions in milk, potato, and egg production, as well as a high level of self-sufficiency in food products in the region. Special attention was given to the development of the food and processing industry, as well as the significant growth of agro-industrial product exports, which have increased by almost 1.8 times over the past six years, reaching 539.4 million US dollars.
In his speech, Rustem Gainullin outlined several areas for cooperation with Ethiopia, including the export of Tatarstan's food products, the exchange of experiences in animal husbandry and crop production, technological partnerships, cooperation in the processing and storage of agricultural products, and educational programs. He also expressed readiness to import coffee, oilseeds, and spices from Ethiopia for further processing and sale in the Russian market to support the national project "Export."
In conclusion, the Deputy Minister proposed a number of practical steps to activate interaction: forming a list of partner enterprises, identifying pilot product directions, conducting B2B meetings, and organizing business missions. Tatarstan, as emphasized by Rustem Gainullin, is open to dialogue and aims to move from general discussions to the implementation of specific, mutually beneficial projects with Ethiopia.
