Ogorodnikov: Agrarians are massively switching to oilseed crops after the blockage of Hormuz.
Photo: IA SM-News May 15 – IA SM.News. The reduction of sown areas of key grain crops due to the Iranian crisis is provoking a global imbalance in the food market. Such structural changes will inevitably lead to a prolonged shortage of basic food products in certain countries. "Analysts and traders took two and a half months to realize the scale of the disaster from the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Due to the shortage of nitrogen fertilizers produced using gas, farmers around the world are forced to reduce sown areas for wheat and corn," states analyst Evgeny Ogorodnikov. In Russia, the shortage of imported components and equipment will also compound the global rally in prices, leading to a significant increase in the cost of feed, meat products, and vegetables. Additional pressure on the domestic market will come from the inevitable rise in export prices for Russian grain, stimulating the export of products abroad. In the medium term, this will require the government to impose strict regulations on exports and increase subsidies for domestic producers to curb food inflation. "To maintain profitability and due to high demand and high prices for biodiesel, farmers are massively switching to oilseed crops, including soybeans and rapeseed. Such substitution, coupled with declining yields, has already led to a frightening spike in prices, causing futures for potatoes to soar by 700%," concluded Ogorodnikov.
Earlier, IA SM-NEWS reported that American businesses are striving to restore ties with China.
