Scientists from the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry named after Vorozhtsov of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have obtained promising compounds based on derivatives of the drug "Prottremin," which have shown activity against Parkinson's disease, reports TASS. "Prottremin" was developed at the same institute. In 2022, it was reported that the drug successfully passed preclinical studies and the first phase of clinical trials.

According to the patent reviewed by the agency, previous attempts to modify the drug's structure often led to a decrease or loss of activity. Therefore, it was important for scientists to find modifications that would either preserve or enhance the substance's action. The document states that all obtained compounds demonstrate antiparkinsonian activity. Moreover, its intensity depends on the chosen disease model and type of motor test.

Researchers managed not only to preserve the necessary properties of the "Prottremin" derivatives but also to increase the effectiveness of individual compounds. As a result of the tests, their action was found to be comparable to or exceeded that of the original drug. Additionally, some compounds showed results surpassing the effect of "Levodopa." In the patent, this drug is referred to as the "gold standard" of Parkinson's disease therapy.

The tests were conducted on mice, in which Parkinson's disease was artificially induced using a special toxin. Two of the three obtained substances improved the animals' motor activity, while the third positively affected their coordination during the test.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. It leads to the death of nerve cells that produce dopamine—a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of movements, mood, and cognitive functions.

According to the World Health Organization's forecast, by 2050, the number of people with Parkinson's disease worldwide may exceed 12 million.
