International Day for Biological Diversity
The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated annually on May 22. The holiday was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1995. Initially, it was proposed to be celebrated on December 29, the day the Convention on Biological Diversity came into force. However, in 2000, the date was moved to May 22 - the day the text of the Convention was adopted at the UN Conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
Biological diversity (biodiversity) is the sum of all forms of life on Earth. It has developed over billions of years under the influence of natural processes, but in recent decades, it has been significantly impacted by human activities. Biodiversity plays a key role in maintaining the resilience of ecosystems and the biosphere. It provides humanity with clean water, food, medicines, and also participates in climate regulation and other functions. The reduction of biodiversity creates risks for food security, public health, the economy, etc. The main threats to biodiversity today include deforestation, environmental pollution, climate change, and the spread of invasive species. According to experts, about one million species of plants and animals are at risk of extinction. Each year, the International Day for Biological Diversity is held under a specific theme reflecting current challenges. The theme for 2026 is: "Local Actions - Global Effect." It emphasizes that contributions to biodiversity conservation are possible at any level: even local initiatives can have a significant impact on solving a global problem. National parks play a special role in biodiversity conservation: they serve as a refuge for rare species, support the integrity of natural ecosystems, and allow for the study of natural processes in their pristine form. We invite you to join in the conservation of nature in the Lower Kama National Park. You can help by following simple rules during your visit: - move along the trails on foot, by bicycle, or on skis; - use motor vehicles only on public roads; - keep noise to a minimum; - follow fire safety rules; - do not litter; - do not damage plants or disturb animals, etc. Support conservation initiatives: participate in volunteer actions, spread knowledge about the value of biodiversity, and choose truly eco-friendly tourism.
