In the first quarter of 2026, cheese production in the Volga Federal District increased by 4% and reached 51.8 thousand tons. The share of the Volga Federal District in the total Russian production rose from 21.7% to 24.7%, which means that every fourth kilogram of Russian cheese is now produced in the regions of the district, reports the press service of Rosselkhozbank. The leader in production volume was Tatarstan, which produced 10.3 thousand tons of cheese, an increase of 12.3%. The second position was taken by Udmurtia with 7.6 thousand tons, followed by Bashkortostan with 5.6 thousand tons. Chuvashia showed significant growth, increasing production by 42.4% to 3.7 thousand tons.

Experts from the Industry Expertise Center analyzed the consumer preferences of the residents of the Volga region and identified interesting trends. Traditional demand leaders — feta, brie, and camembert — are gradually losing ground. Against this backdrop, interest in Russian cheese varieties has noticeably increased: across the district, interest in them has risen by 21%. In Udmurtia, this figure increased by 78%, in the Saratov region by 36%, and in Orenburg and Bashkortostan by 30%.
The study notes that residents of Penza prefer parmesan, while those in Chuvashia and Mordovia favor cheeses with white mold, and in Tatarstan, demand for "Kostromskoy" cheese has increased by 60% compared to last year. At the same time, there is a decline in interest in Dutch cheese varieties — on average by 17% across the district. Maasdam is also losing popularity: for example, in the Kirov region, demand for it fell by 49%.
Earlier it was reported that in Tatarstan, the production of products decreased by 2.2% since the beginning of the year. The production volumes of butter fell the most.
