May 27 - the day of the founding of the TASSR: history and significance
On May 27, 1920, a decree was signed establishing the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. This event marked the starting point of modern statehood in Tatarstan and defined the path of the republic's development within the RSFSR. On May 27, 1920, the Decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee on the establishment of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (TASSR) was signed. This event was pivotal in the history of Tatarstan, determining the further development of the republic within the RSFSR. The decree was signed by the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars V. I. Lenin, Chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee M. I. Kalinin, and Secretary of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee A. S. Enukidze. As a result of the adoption of this document, a Temporary Revolutionary Committee was established in the territory of the future republic, and on June 25, 1920, power officially passed to the new governing bodies of the TASSR. This day is considered the starting point of modern statehood in Tatarstan and is celebrated annually as an important historical date. The establishment of the TASSR became part of a large-scale national-state construction in Soviet Russia, when autonomies were formed for various peoples of the country. The date of May 27, 1920, for signing the decree on the establishment of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (TASSR) was chosen not by chance and did not have symbolic significance related to Tatar history or culture. This date reflects the completion of a lengthy process of discussion and document preparation that took place in Moscow and Kazan since the beginning of 1920. By May 1920, all organizational, political, and territorial issues had been agreed upon, and the decree was signed by the highest leaders of the RSFSR — V. I. Lenin, M. I. Kalinin, and A. S. Enukidze. The choice of date was determined by the internal logic of Soviet state construction: by this time, similar autonomies had already been created for other peoples of the country, and the Bolsheviks sought to promptly consolidate the national-state structure in the territory of the former Russian Empire. The signing of the decree on May 27 was the result of the work of a special commission and the coordination of all details, rather than the result of a symbolic choice of day. The celebration of the republic's formation in Kazan took place later — on June 25, 1920, when power was officially transferred to the Temporary Revolutionary Committee of the TASSR.
