The number of confirmed military casualties from the Volga region in the war in Ukraine has exceeded 55,000 people.

According to independent counts conducted by "Idel.Realii," the number of confirmed deceased Russian servicemen from the Volga regions and Astrakhan region has reached 55,089. This list includes only the names of those whose deaths have been publicly confirmed: by authorities, relatives of the deceased, educational institutions, or other public organizations. Therefore, the actual loss figures may be significantly higher. The absolute leader in the number of confirmed deaths not only in the macro-region but also among all subjects of the Russian Federation remains Bashkortostan. The highest losses recorded to date are in Bashkortostan — over 9,900 people, followed by Tatarstan with 8,917 people and Perm Krai — 5,857 people. The lowest number of confirmed losses among the Volga regions were suffered by Mari El (1,369 people) and Mordovia (713 people). As previously calculated by the "Russian Service of the BBC," the confirmed losses of just the two Volga republics — Bashkortostan and Tatarstan — already exceed the official losses of the entire Soviet Union over 10 years of war in Afghanistan, where just over 15,000 people died, by 20%. Overall, according to journalists' estimates, Russia's losses in the first year of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine exceeded the total losses of the USSR and the Russian Federation in all conflicts after World War II. According to data from a joint study by "Mediazona," the "Russian Service of the BBC," and a team of volunteers, as of May 9, the deaths of 217,808 Russian servicemen have been confirmed by name. Officially, Moscow and Kyiv typically do not disclose data on their own deceased, focusing on enemy losses. The Russian Ministry of Defense last reported the number of deceased on the day of the announcement of partial mobilization, September 21, 2022. The then-head of the agency, Sergei Shoigu, stated that there were 5,937 deceased. In conditions of military censorship, the named lists compiled by journalists based on open data remain one of the most important independent assessments of the scale of losses.
