A resident of Nizhnekamsk was robbed of 1.75 million under the pretext of replacing electric meters.
A resident of Nizhnekamsk was defrauded of 1.75 million rubles by scammers who called supposedly to replace the electric meter. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan, in December of last year, a 69-year-old man received a call from an unknown person who introduced himself as an employee of the electric grid service and spoke about a free replacement of electric meters. Believing him, the man dictated the code from an SMS. After that, he received a series of calls from fake employees of "Gosuslugi," "Rosfinmonitoring," and the FSB. They managed to convince the man that his personal account had been hacked, and they first forced him to transfer 300,000 rubles, and then to sell his car. The proceeds from the sale of the car, 1 million rubles, were also transferred to the accounts specified by the scammers. Meanwhile, for several months, they monitored the victim's movements and demanded that he not tell anyone about the calls, threatening him with criminal liability. The man only contacted the police after he told his son about his situation, who explained to his father that he had been speaking with scammers all this time.
"Scammers use fear and trust in government agencies. No real employee will ask for codes from SMS, transfers to 'safe accounts,' or the sale of property," the police warn.
