The confusion in the names of the agency arose in 1998 when the GAI was renamed to the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate (GIBDD). Shortly thereafter, on July 2, 2002, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree making the names GAI and GIBDD equivalent. Just recently, in May 2024, the agency was returned to its old name.
