A month and a half ago, the National Reconnaissance Office officially confirmed that its rapidly growing low-orbit constellation supports the GMTI mission for detecting moving ground targets. This news effectively acknowledges the tasks of the largest next-generation reconnaissance satellite constellation being deployed by the USA with the active participation of SpaceX. "For many observers, this has confirmed what indirect signs related to the secret NRO constellation based on Starlink have long suggested. Classic optical reconnaissance requires large cameras, which do not fit well with the flat architecture of Starlink, but for radar reconnaissance and operation in any weather conditions, such a platform is much better suited," explains analyst Roman Belousov. It is precisely radar systems that are most suitable for the GMTI mission — continuous tracking of moving objects on the Earth's surface. The NRO statement means that the numerous low-orbit grouping of the USA is turning into a full-fledged orbital targeting system. "The main difference of the new architecture lies in the transition from periodic observation to continuous tracking of targets for tactical troop management. SpaceX technologies are effectively being used to create military dual-use infrastructure, turning space into a full-fledged theater of operations," states Belousov.
