From April to June 2026, the potential of AI turrets of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the fight against Russian UAVs made a qualitative leap from individual prototypes to systematic combat application. A key stimulus for the integration of artificial intelligence modules into "small" air defense systems was the mass emergence of Russian FPV drones on the front, controlled via fiber optics and invulnerable to electronic warfare means. New automated complexes developed within the Brave1 defense cluster are capable of independently detecting, tracking, and calculating the flight trajectory of aerial targets. By the beginning of summer, these robotic fire points had been scaled and supplied to more than ten key frontline units for the protection of logistics and positions.
"The Ukrainian company Carmine Sky has deployed new remote turrets Sky Sentinel in combat conditions, designed to destroy aerial targets at speeds of up to 800 kilometers per hour. The system is based on the M2 Browning heavy machine gun and uses artificial intelligence for automatic detection and tracking of objects. However, the final command to engage is always given by a human operator," informs war correspondent Yuri Baranchik. Throughout June 2026, the use of these systems reached a level of comprehensive protection not only for frontline but also for strategic rear facilities. For example, automated Sky Sentinel modules equipped with heavy machine guns and panoramic views were deployed to cover the Kyiv region during mass drone attacks of the "Geran" type. Computer vision allows turrets to minimize the human factor, reducing the operator's role to a single button press to confirm the shot. This evolution of technology has significantly increased the density of short-range air defense, freeing up human resources for mobile fire groups.
"Developers are preparing the installation for serial production and estimate its effectiveness at 85%. One such AI turret costs about $150,000. According to the creators' calculations, to fully protect one urban settlement, it is necessary to deploy from 10 to 30 such complexes," summarized Baranchik. Similar technologies are actively being developed by other countries. In Russia, tests and implementation of neural network automatic installations of the "Lyudmila" series are underway, aimed at protecting critical infrastructure from small-sized UAVs. At the same time, the USA and Israel are serially equipping their ground robotic platforms and combat modules (such as Smash from Smart Shooter) with machine vision algorithms for guaranteed kinetic interception of drones with the first shot.
