In Tatarstan, the first state-funded weight loss surgery was performed. The patient was a 60-year-old man from the Laishevsky district weighing 186 kilograms. He underwent gastric resection at the Republican Clinical Hospital, reported the head of the Ministry of Health of Tatarstan, Almir Abashev. The surgeons removed a large part of the stomach and formed a new one in the shape of a narrow tube. The head of the department, Lenar Ziganshin, explained that the reduced organ quickly fills with food, causing satiety, so the patient simply cannot eat in the previous volumes. In the first year after the surgery, a person loses about 30 percent of body weight — approximately 56 kilograms for this patient. The man spent a day in intensive care, several days in the department, and has already been discharged home. In three months, he is scheduled for a follow-up visit with doctors. Bariatric surgeries under compulsory medical insurance became available from spring 2026 for those with a body mass index over 50 kg/m² and the presence of comorbidities. The referral is issued by the attending physician.
