"Ъ" learned about the risks of the S7 contract for the supply of Tu-214 being disrupted for technical reasons.
The contract of S7 Airlines with the State Transport Leasing Company (GTLK) for the supply of up to 100 Tu-214 aircraft may fall through. Among the reasons are the lack of guarantees for modernizing the cockpit for a two-member crew, minimizing downtime, and improving flight performance characteristics (LTC). This was reported by "Kommersant" citing sources in the aviation industry. Another issue, the media writes, is the lack of subsidies that could reduce the cost of the aircraft (about 9 billion rubles) by at least a third. S7 still hopes for the contract, but experts believe that the delay in advance payments jeopardizes the launch of serial production. Additional funding for cockpit modernization is also being discussed. According to one source, this requires over 20 billion rubles. Furthermore, sources in the aviation industry point to a lack of funds for modernizing maintenance schedules to minimize downtimes. The question of training flight engineers remains open: the specialized program has not been launched, and the mechanisms for its funding have not been determined. The contract is to be signed by the end of 2026, as stipulated in the memorandum that S7 signed with the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) in the fall of 2024. S7 clarified to the publication that the companies continue to discuss the supply of aircraft. There is "no talk of a breakdown in negotiations," they noted. S7 confirmed that the modification of the aircraft with a two-member cockpit crew is important for the carrier, but the company allows for the possibility of receiving the first aircraft with a three-member crew. Last week, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Anton Alikhanov, reported that S7 requested to finalize the Tu-214 aircraft for the transition from a three-person crew to a two-person crew. According to him, relevant discussions are already underway, as well as the possibility of initially receiving 5–10 aircraft in a three-member configuration, and then transitioning to a two-member configuration. Earlier, UAC stated that serial deliveries of Tu-214 aircraft should start in 2029. This follows from a trilateral agreement signed by UAC (part of Rostec), S7 Group, and the State Transport Leasing Company (GTLK). The contract implies the supply of 100 Tu-214 aircraft, including aircraft for S7 Airlines.
On June 24, it became known that Red Wings Airlines would become the first operator of the import-substituted Tu-214 — it will receive 11 aircraft. Deliveries will begin in 2027. The Tu-214 is a Russian twin-engine passenger aircraft of the medium-haul class, capable of covering up to 4,500 kilometers. At the end of 2025, the upgraded version of the aircraft received approval for changes to the type design after completing certification tests. During the modernization, imported equipment, materials, and components were replaced with domestic analogs.
