In the Republic of Tatarstan, as well as throughout Russia, there is a steady and constantly growing interest in the institution of the prenuptial agreement, which just a few decades ago was perceived as exotic and a sign of distrust between spouses.
Today, as statistics and expert opinions indicate, this legal tool is becoming increasingly familiar and in demand, especially among the active and economically independent part of the population. According to RBC, citing data from the press service of the Federal Notary Chamber (FNP), by the end of 2025, notaries in Tatarstan certified about 3.6 thousand prenuptial agreements, and considering that during the same period about 24 thousand marriages were registered in the republic, this means that the agreement defining the property rights and obligations of husband and wife is concluded on average by every seventh couple, or about 15 percent of newlyweds. The republic traditionally ranks among the national leaders in the number of requests for notarization of such documents alongside Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Moscow region, and the Krasnodar Territory, and confidently occupies the first place in the Volga Federal District. From distrust to awareness: what has changed in the attitude towards prenuptial agreements Lawyer Gulnara Beglova noted that over the past year, the number of certified prenuptial agreements in Russia has increased almost 2.5 times: in 2025, according to the Ministry of Justice report, 255 thousand were registered compared to about 109 thousand in 2024. The expert links this rapid growth not only to an increase in the level of financial and legal literacy among citizens but also to an awareness of the reality of entrepreneurial risks, financial responsibility to creditors, as well as a deep psychological demand for stability and predictability. According to experts, more and more people today perceive the prenuptial agreement not as a manifestation of distrust towards their partner, but as a civilized and convenient tool that allows them to define property rights in advance, without conflicts and litigation, and avoid unpleasant situations in the future. In practice, couples who already have certain assets or are only planning to acquire them most often come to the notary for such an agreement, and the average age of spouses ranges from 35 to 50 years. These can be young families buying housing with a mortgage, couples with already established joint property, as well as cases where one of the spouses is engaged in entrepreneurial activities. Property issues and protection from creditors Prenuptial agreements allow spouses to regulate a wide range of property relations and pre-allocate rights to real estate, bank deposits, cars, business assets, and much more. However, specialists warn that this document cannot be used to abuse rights or infringe on the interests of creditors. As Beglova explained, there was a period when prenuptial agreements were actively concluded as an attempt to evade financial responsibility, but judicial practice in such cases today is quite uniform, and creditors have legal ways to protect themselves. When the agreement is terminated Family law allows the husband and wife to change or terminate the prenuptial agreement at any time by mutual consent, and such cases do occur in practice, although not often. According to lawyers, changing or terminating the agreement is usually associated with a radical change in the spouses' property situation, cessation of entrepreneurial activity, acquisition of new expensive property, or changes in family circumstances. It was previously reported that in Kazan, more than a hundred couples plan to register their marriage today, July 8, on Family, Love, and Fidelity Day.
