The turnover of small and medium-sized enterprises in Kazan reached 396 billion rubles.
Despite the challenging economic situation and increasing pressure on businesses, small and medium-sized enterprises remain one of the key drivers of the economy in Kazan. This was stated by the Deputy Head of the Executive Committee of the city, Ildar Shakirov, during the business Monday meeting. According to him, today small and medium-sized businesses account for 42.5% of Kazan's gross territorial product. In the first half of 2026, the turnover of enterprises in this sector amounted to 396 billion rubles. The small and medium-sized business sector employs 188.7 thousand people, which is 2.2% more than the previous year. The average salary in small enterprises reached 58.8 thousand rubles, increasing by 50%. There are 84 thousand small and medium-sized enterprises operating in Kazan. Of these, 34.9 thousand are small and micro-enterprises, 347 are medium-sized enterprises, and 48.7 thousand are individual entrepreneurs. Additionally, there are 170 thousand self-employed individuals in the city. The largest share in the structure of small and medium-sized businesses is occupied by trade and services (35%). This is followed by construction (11%), professional, scientific, and technical activities (10%), transportation and storage (8%), manufacturing (7%), and other sectors make up 29%. The positive dynamics in the sector are primarily ensured by the development of trade, public catering, and services. Thus, the retail trade turnover in the first half of the year reached 256.4 billion rubles, increasing by 4.3%. The turnover of public catering amounted to 16 billion rubles with an increase of 8%, while the volume of paid services reached 84.7 billion rubles, which is 7.5% higher than the level of the same period last year. At the same time, Ildar Shakirov noted that in the first half of 2026, there is a trend where the number of liquidated enterprises exceeds the number of newly created ones. Since the beginning of the year, 10.1 thousand small and medium-sized enterprises have ceased operations, while 8.1 thousand new ones have been registered. The most new companies appeared in trade and services (2.2 thousand), construction (1.1 thousand), transportation and storage (790), as well as in manufacturing (396). However, these sectors also recorded the highest number of closures: in trade and services, 3.8 thousand entities ceased operations, in construction – 1.4 thousand, in transportation and storage – 825, and in manufacturing – 601. According to Shakirov, the main reasons for ceasing operations are the increase in tax burden and high interest rates on loans. Despite the existing difficulties, the small and medium-sized business sector continues to adapt to changing economic conditions and remains one of the most important components of Kazan's economy.
