August 11—International Heart Day

From August 10 to 16, 2026, Russia is holding the Week for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD), timed to coincide with the International Day of Healthy Heart, which is celebrated on August 11. According to the World Health Organization, circulatory system pathologies remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide. In Russia, approximately 1.3 million people die from these diseases each year, with nearly a third being of working age. Cardiovascular diseases are a group of pathologies that affect the heart and blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries). Among the most common CVDs are: - arterial hypertension (high blood pressure); - ischemic heart disease (IHD); - myocardial infarction, stroke; - arrhythmias (heart rhythm disturbances); - atherosclerosis, thrombosis, venous diseases (e.g., varicose veins). The danger of these diseases lies in the fact that they often develop unnoticed over several years or decades. Signals that should not be ignored include high blood pressure, regular pain or discomfort in the chest, shortness of breath, heart rhythm disturbances, weakness, recurring dizziness, and swelling. This is why early diagnosis and prevention of these pathologies are important. Various laboratory and instrumental examination methods are used for early diagnosis. Monitoring body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol levels should become routine. Laboratory tests—lipid profiles (LDL - low-density lipoproteins, HDL - high-density lipoproteins, measurement of glycated hemoglobin levels) are also used for early diagnosis of CVD. Among the instrumental methods are ECG, stress tests, echocardiography, or ultrasound of the carotid arteries, etc. What is useful to do to prevent the occurrence of CVD: - Physical activity. It is recommended to have at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Fast walking (30-40 minutes a day), swimming, yoga, or cycling are ideal for heart health. It is important to remember: intensity is secondary, the main thing is regularity. - Rational nutrition. The basis of the diet should be vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean protein. It is critically important to limit salt to 5 grams per day (this prevents fluid retention and increased pressure), added sugar, and saturated fats, which lead to plaque formation in blood vessels. - Giving up bad habits. Smoking causes vasospasm and chronic oxygen starvation of tissues. The risk of developing CVD is significantly higher in smokers. Alcohol abuse is also directly toxic to the heart muscle. - Weight control. Excess weight creates additional strain on the myocardium and reduces the elasticity of blood vessels. - Stress management and sleep. Constant release of cortisol and adrenaline narrows blood vessels and increases blood clotting. Chronic sleep deprivation (less than 6 hours) increases the risk of CVD by about 30%. The norm of sleep for an adult is 7-8 hours. - Regular health check-ups, especially important after the age of 40, as well as in the presence of hereditary predisposition. The heart works without weekends, pumping about 10 tons of blood a year. This week is a great reason to thank it with responsible care.
