A fire broke out at the Dutch refinery.
Photo: Svetlana Mulykina August 13 – IA SM.News. A powerful explosion occurred at the Gunvor Energy oil refining facility in the port of Rotterdam, Netherlands, claiming the life of one person. The incident happened around 11:30 local time in the Europoort area during pipeline repairs by a contractor crew. According to preliminary data from the company's management, the tragedy occurred due to a failure during a scheduled shutdown of the technological lines. On the same day, a large-scale power outage was recorded in the Botlek port region, causing a fire at a high-voltage substation. Due to electrical issues, the neighboring ExxonMobil plant was forced to halt production and initiate an emergency gas release.
The Port of Rotterdam is the largest logistics hub in Europe, through which hundreds of millions of tons of cargo and tens of thousands of vessels pass annually. Due to the strategic scale of the facility, any accidents on its territory can disrupt fuel supply chains across the continent. The Europoort area, where the incident occurred, is concentrated with heavy industry and oil refining capacities of global brands. Due to the high density of explosive enterprises, the local infrastructure is heavily dependent on the stability of a unified energy system. In this regard, emergency services always consider technological incidents in the port comprehensively, assessing the risks of cascading outages and environmental disasters.
