Mating season for moose: residents of Tatarstan are asked to be more cautious.

      The State Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for Bioresources warns: the end of summer and the beginning of autumn is the rutting season for large ungulates, including moose. During this time, which can last up to two months (until October), males eat little, move a lot, and become particularly dangerous, sometimes attacking people involuntarily. At night, they can cover significant distances, appearing on highways and creating emergency situations. The moose is considered the most dangerous animal for drivers due to its size: an adult moose weighs between 300 and 600 kg, and a collision with it is deadly for both the animal and the person. Specialists from the agency urge forest visitors, including mushroom pickers, to be especially vigilant and not approach the animals. If you see a moose on the road, you must stop immediately, turn on your hazard lights, and wait for it to leave. Do not honk: a sudden sound can provoke an attack on the vehicle. Drivers are strongly advised to adhere to speed limits, and at night, reduce speed and turn on fog lights with diffused light. If a moose suddenly runs onto the road, do not attempt to swerve around it at high speed—try to brake or pull over to the shoulder. If you hit or find an injured or dead wild animal on the road, you should immediately report it to the emergency service at 112. It is important to remember: if a driver leaves the scene of an accident, they may be held liable, and for the death of an animal, they will have to pay the state compensation for harm to wildlife.
