In Kazan, a family with two children was hospitalized after being poisoned by gas in their apartment.

      Last night a married couple and their children, aged 7 and 17, were poisoned by gas. The incident occurred in one of the apartments of building No. 10 on Daurskaya Street in Kazan, the Housing Inspection of Tatarstan reported.

      The head of the family was hospitalized in the 7th city hospital; the woman and the children were taken to the Republican Children’s Clinical Hospital (DRKB). Gas workers were unable to enter the apartment; the riser supplying five apartments was shut off. Gas supply will be restored only after the apartments are inspected and an act from the pipe-and-stove service is provided.

      Twelve hours earlier, gas was also turned off in building No. 17 on Shamil Usmanov Street in Kazan due to backdraft. As a result, the riser supplying 10 apartments was shut off. Gas supply will be restored after the management company provides the stove service’s act.

      The agency reminded that backdraft in an apartment building is a phenomenon in which exhaust air is not expelled outside but is drawn back into the premises. The change in flow direction occurs because the pressure inside the premises becomes lower than outside.

      Some causes of backdraft: ventilation blockage — ducts can become clogged with debris, grease, snow and soot; weak air inflow — plastic windows fit tightly at the edges and practically do not let cold air in; installation of a gas water heater, kitchen hood and other equipment that was not accounted for in the original design; a malfunction of the exhaust hood or of the entire ventilation system.
