Specialists at the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed an improved method of producing hydrogen from methane and hydrogen sulfide using a new molybdenum-based catalyst, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education reported.
As the ministry clarified, scientists of the Federal Research Center Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences improved the hydrogen sulfide–methane reforming (HSMR) process by creating a molybdenum catalyst on an aluminum oxide support and studying the reaction mechanism on its surface.
Today, most industrial hydrogen is produced by catalytic steam reforming — the conversion of methane with water vapor — and by coal gasification. The main drawback of this technology is high carbon dioxide emissions.
A more environmentally friendly alternative is producing hydrogen from methane and hydrogen sulfide. The carbon disulfide formed in the process is a valuable chemical feedstock in demand in the pharmaceutical industry.
Kazan chemists studied the HSMR process using a molybdenum sulfide catalyst on an oxide support. For the first time, the intermediate species CH3S was detected during the reaction. Based on this, a reaction mechanism was proposed: methane is activated by sulfur species on the catalyst surface, which increases the stability of the system and reduces the formation of unwanted coke deposits.
The study was carried out as part of the large-scale project “Ecology of Industrial Cities: Development of Comprehensive Non-Standard Scientific and Technological Solutions for Environmental Monitoring, Neutralization and Deep Processing of Industrial and Household Waste” with the support of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The results were published in the Journal of Catalysis. Photo: Freepik
