Next year, Russia has decided to tighten the requirements for combating Sosnowski's hogweed. According to amendments from the State Duma, landowners will be required to eliminate the toxic weed. Otherwise, there will be fines.
As reported by the media, in Tatarstan, over the past five years, the poisonous hogweed has spread over a thousand hectares – this is a third of all affected land in the region. The areas particularly suffering are Vysokogorsky, Zelenodolsky, Laishevsky, Pestrechinsky, Rybno-Slobodsky, Baltasinsky districts, and Kazan itself. In the village of Bolshie Kabany in the Laishevsky district, the situation has become critical – four-meter giant plants have literally surrounded residential houses, filling ravines and roadside areas. Every day, local residents are forced to walk along narrow paths between the thickets of this dangerous plant, the sap of which causes serious burns and allergic reactions. Specialists note that a single plant can produce up to 20,000 seeds, which spread rapidly across the nearby territory. Starting in March next year, the fight against hogweed will cease to be a voluntary initiative, acquiring the status of a legislative obligation for landowners. "We need to increase responsibility for the condition of the land. Hogweed is not just a weed, but a threat to health," emphasizes the head of the agriculture department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Tatarstan, Irek Sadykov. As reported by "Tatar. Inform," this year, 25 million rubles have been allocated from the republic's budget to combat the green invader. Special attention is paid to the treatment of territories – an annual chemical and mechanical treatment is carried out on 100 hectares. However, as noted by the head of the district branch of the Rosselkhoznadzor, Larisa Smirnova, full victory will require at least two to three seasons of intensive work.
