At least 6,000 natives of Tatarstan have already died in the war against Ukraine — calculations by "Idel.Reality"

      Tatarstan, according to journalists' research, ranks second in the number of casualties overall in Russia. At least 6,011 natives of Tatarstan have already died since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. "Idel.Realii" has been keeping its own count of the dead since February 24, 2022. Our list includes only those whose deaths have been recognized in one way or another by the Russian side, relatives of the deceased, or educational or other public institutions. The actual numbers may be significantly higher. Just last week, "Idel.Realii" identified the names of another 474 residents of the Volga region who died in the war, of which 71 are from Tatarstan. After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, several "volunteer" named battalions were formed in Tatarstan (in 2022, the "Timer" and "Alga" battalions were created, later "Batyr"). According to Andrey Kozlov, head of the military service selection point in Kazan, more than 12,000 people signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense in 2024. The plan was exceeded by 7%. In mid-July 2025, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov stated that about 45,000 residents of Tatarstan had gone through or were participating in the war with Ukraine. A few months ago—in March 2025—Minnikhanov reported the numbers of contract soldiers and mobilized individuals from the republic for the war in Ukraine during a meeting with Vladimir Putin—38,169 people. "Since the start of the special military operation (the authorities of Russia refer to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine as the 'special military operation'—'Idel.Realii'), the number of contract soldiers and mobilized individuals is 38,169. We are also exceeding our plans for this year; we are fulfilling the planned assignments," Minnikhanov reported. A former participant in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, State Council Deputy of Tatarstan Rasim Baksikov acknowledged at the end of July this year that "in terms of the percentage of the population on the front lines, Tatarstan outpaces other regions." He mentioned this in an interview with the "Tatar-Inform" agency. "I know for sure that it is the residents of our republic who are scattered across the entire front. This does not include the three battalions that were formed right here, 'Alga,' 'Timer,' and 'Batyr,' which have a significant impact on the tactical situation at the front," Baksikov clarified. Tatarstan, according to the counts of "Mediazona" and the "Russian Service of the BBC," ranks second in the number of casualties overall in Russia. Leading is Bashkortostan, where the war has claimed the lives of at least 7,033 military personnel from the republic.
