HIV-infected individuals experience COVID-19 more severely: results of a pilot study
The work was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. Researchers analyzed clinical data from 18 patients from Tatarstan. An international scientific group revealed an increased severity of coronavirus infection in patients with HIV. The relevant data was obtained during a pilot study conducted in Kazan, as reported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.
Participants and methodology: The study involved specialists from the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology of Kazan Federal University; scientists from Uzbekistan and South Africa. The work was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. Researchers analyzed clinical data from 18 patients from Tatarstan: 9 individuals with co-infection (HIV + COVID-19); 9 individuals only with COVID-19.
Key results: Fatal outcomes. Of the four deceased, all had both HIV and coronavirus simultaneously. Severe course of the disease. In patients with dual infection:
- more intensive therapy was often required;
- more pronounced lung damage was observed;
- liver function disorders were recorded;
- problems with blood coagulation were noted.
Immunological features: Patients with co-infection exhibited a specific immune profile: significantly elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines; excessive inflammatory response was recorded, which likely provokes severe complications. The study emphasizes the need for special attention to patients with HIV when treating COVID-19 and indicates the importance of further studying the mechanisms of interaction between the two infections.
