The Kazan Zoo Botanical Garden will hold the Fuchs Fest for the 250th anniversary of its founder.
In September, the Kazan Zoo Botanical Garden will hold the Fuchs Fest, dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the founder of the botanical garden, the outstanding naturalist, physician, and botanist Karl Fuchs, announced the director of the botanical garden, Asiya Gizzatullina, at the business Monday meeting. "The festival program includes workshops, lectures, a themed photo zone, art objects, and tours of the historical and new territories of the botanical garden," said the director. She added that it was Fuchs who laid the foundations of the botanical collection, which today is the pride of the Kazan Zoo Botanical Garden. "This is a jubilee year: 250 years for Karl Fuchs, 220 years for the botanical garden itself. It is one of the oldest in our country and probably beyond. Fuchs was one of the professors at Kazan University who made a significant contribution to the development of Kazan and projects like the botanical garden. I hope Fuchs Fest, as we named it, will contribute to the cultural life of our capital. This is undoubtedly a tribute to the memory of this great outstanding person," reacted Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin to the report. In the first half of 2026, about 270,000 people visited the botanical garden. Adults accounted for 156,000, while children made up 114,000. "The dynamics are positive, and we see a steady interest from family audiences, which confirms the demand for our educational and environmental programs," commented Gizzatullina on the figures. The institution's collection includes 143 species of animals and 1,136 species of plants, many of which are listed in the Red Books of various levels. This year, 59 offspring of various species were born here, and as part of the population recovery program, 11 saker falcons have already been released into the wild. During the Russia-ASEAN summit, which took place from June 17 to 19, two Asian elephants arrived at the Kazan Zoo Botanical Garden, and in September, the first International Seminar on the Welfare of Elephants, Rhinos, and Hippos in Zoos will also be held here.
