Quickly and paperlessly: how check-in works with Digital ID in Russian hotels
As part of the national project "Tourism and Hospitality," the use of the "Digital ID" service for hotel check-ins is expanding in Russia. As of today, the ability to register without a paper passport—using a dynamic QR code in the "Max" messenger—is available in more than 800 hotels across about 70 regions of the Russian Federation, covering more than half of the country's regions. The registration procedure significantly speeds up the check-in process: hotel staff only need to scan the QR code, after which the passport data is automatically retrieved from government databases, eliminating manual entry errors. For Russian citizens to access this service, they must first create a Digital ID in "Max" through integration with the "Gosuslugi" portal and undergo verification. Only adults can use the service; however, the use of the Digital ID remains voluntary—guests still have the right to present a paper passport. Among the leading regions in terms of the number of connected hotels are the Republic of Tatarstan, Pskov, Ulyanovsk, Kirov, Novgorod regions, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. Starting from September 1, 2026, all hotels with more than 50 rooms will be required to provide the option for check-in via the "Max" messenger. Dmitry Vakhryukov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, noted the high dynamics of technology implementation and positive feedback from businesses and tourists, emphasizing that the priority tasks remain the synchronization of information systems and staff training. Rustam Khaibullov, Vice President for Strategic Projects at VK, highlighted that the service reduces the check-in process to one minute and relieves guests from the need to fill out forms.
Earlier, the procedure was evaluated by Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, and Maxim Reshetnikov, Minister of Economic Development.
